Three teachers hold the whole week

Velour has never had a rota of visiting instructors. Anneke, Tomás and Ruth teach every class on the schedule themselves, which is why they know your name, your knee and the phrase you keep rushing.

Between them they cover contemporary, heels and jazz. They watch each other teach, they share notes about you, and each of them has been on this parquet for years rather than months. Eight people at a time is only worth anything if the same pair of eyes keeps watching.

Anneke Vogt

Contemporary, floorwork, founder

Anneke danced for eleven years in ensemble work in Munich and Ghent before she opened Velour in a former bookbinder's workshop on Türkenstraße. She teaches contemporary the way she was taught it in Belgium: weight first, shape second, and a lot of time spent on the floor. Her classes are quiet. She talks less than most teachers and corrects with a hand on your shoulder blade rather than from the front of the room.

Tomás Ferreira

Heels, jazz technique

Tomás trained in Lisbon and worked in commercial and music-video choreography for six years before he decided he preferred a room of eight to a set of forty. He teaches heels as a technical discipline: what the ankle is doing, where the weight sits, how a walk carries across a floor. His Wednesday advanced class is the hardest ninety minutes on the schedule and the one people cross the city for.

Ruth Landauer

Jazz, repertoire

Ruth has been dancing jazz since 1994 and teaching it since 2009, most of that time in Schwabing before she joined Velour in its second year. She keeps a notebook for every class and will remember, four weeks later, exactly which count you dropped. Her Saturday first-steps class exists because she thinks adults are told far too often that they have missed their chance.

"Nobody has ever walked in too late. They have only walked in nervous."
